Almost time…

 Our kingdom Arts and Sciences competition is this Saturday.  

I’m competing on this level for the first time.

Pretty nervous, but I’m confident that I know my art.

I’m happy with how the project came out and will be posting a full rundown of my documentation and pictures of the progression and final result after Saturday.

I have a smaller project to finish (hopefully before the end of March) and then will be moving my focus to my next idea.

I’m going to try my hand at the ecclesiastical gloves.  

I’m debating using a more modern pattern and size 2 needles first as I’ve never made gloves before.  This may give me a chance to become more comfortable with all the fiddly bits before I go back to the size 0000 needles or possibly smaller with size 00000.  I guess it depends how crazy I’m feeling.

One of my other goals for 2025 is to use up some of the fiber I have in my stash and spin a good amount of it.  I miss my wheel and it’s nice to have it parked in the living room when I’m watching TV.  But I’ll likely bounce between the wheel and my many dropspindles.  I’d also like to try and figure out the Spanish spindle I picked up last year and haven’t tried yet.

But for now, keeping my fingers crossed that I do well on Saturday.

 Yesterday I competed in our kingdom's A&S.  I had a bunch of people tell me they thought my project was woven or embroidered.  Nope- it was knit. It was a great experience but I'll fully admit I was disappointed I didn't make it to the finals.  However, there were a ton of fantastic entrants and the top five were amazing. And, now I know what it's like, so I can hopefully do better next time. Not Always Knitting

 One of my projects this fall was a change and a bit of a challenge. Mistress Alys asked me to create the Master of Defense glove for Master Yehuda.  I decided to move away from my preferred medium of yarn and chose to do black work embroidery instead. I went through my resources and located patterns that I felt would work best. I worked with 28 count Aida cloth and regular embroidery thread.  The glove is a purchased deerskin fencing glove. The pictures may not be the best, but I was happy with how it came out.  And I believe Yehuda liked it as well. I still have the second glove to embroider before I go back to my knitting.

Little moments, big impacts

 Sometimes the smallest things have unexpected consequences. At St. Eligius last November, a  A&S competitor took time away from her own display to talk to me about mine.  The spinning experiment did not come out the way I thought and she and I discussed possible reasons why.  We geeked out as fiber nerds do. Then, this lovely person showed me a new technique for spinning that I had never tried before and it blew my mind.  I still haven't quite gotten the hang of it, but I'm working on it. I couldn't tell you exactly how this interaction affected me, but it made a huge, lasting impact. When I heard that Morwenna was being elevated to the Laurel at Harper's Retreat, I knew I wanted to do something to show my appreciation. I proceed to scour through patterns until I found something I liked and then combined a couple for the look I was going for.
